Washington, 12 de diciembre de 2023.- The Comptroller General of the Republic of Cuba, Gladys Bejarano, ratified her country's commitment to preventing and confronting corruption, because "it is an inextricable part of the principles that we defend."
Bejarano spoke this Tuesday at the Tenth Session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (CoSP10), which is being held in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, between December 11 and 15.
It is not possible to aspire to build better societies, better countries, or to form good men and women, if effective measures against corruption are not adopted, she stressed.
We firmly maintain, she stressed, that officials and managers must be an example to the people they serve, and their behavior must contribute positively to forging the society that we build and that we want our children to inherit.
He argued that all this work was reinforced with “the approval of the new Constitution of the Republic and the legal provisions that implement it, as well as, by the Directives issued by the Government of the Republic, for the strengthening of the Prevention and Confrontation of manifestations of corruption.”
The comptroller highlighted the importance of "design and implementation of policies and tools with a preventive approach, based on education, control, discipline, accountability to maintain transparency, order and legality."
Unfortunately, she indicated, there are cases of corruption that go beyond national borders, which is why we dedicate special attention to international cooperation and the signing of bilateral agreements of reciprocal assistance, as well as with the relevant international organizations.
He also recalled that "for a developing country, like ours, subject to an economic, commercial and financial blockade, imposed by the United States, which has lasted more than 60 years, causing a shortage of resources, it has a negative impact on all areas of the public and private life of the nation, including the fight against corruption.
The blockade is the main obstacle to the economic and social development of my country, and a massive and flagrant violation of the human rights of all Cubans, she expressed.
The island's delegation participating in CoSP10 is chaired by Bejarano and is made up of officials from the Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The United Nations Convention against Corruption is the only universal legally binding instrument to combat this crime and has almost global acceptance, with 190 States Parties.
Negotiated in Vienna and adopted by the General Assembly in 2003, the Convention celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year.
