United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization adopts resolution on the Question of Puerto Rico.

New York, June 20, 2024.- The Special Committee on Decolonization of the United Nations adopted, this Thursday, a resolution on the Question of Puerto Rico.

In his intervention to present the aforementioned draft resolution, Ambassador Yuri Ariel Gala López, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, considered that, for the Greater Antilles, the presentation of the text was an example of the historical commitment with the brother people of Puerto Rico and with its patriots, who over several centuries have given moving examples in the fight for self-determination and independence.

After being adopted by consensus, Ambassador Gala López considered that the approval of this resolution constitutes “a tribute to the patriotic spirit of the Puerto Rican people and to the tradition of struggle led by their heroes, who are also those of Cuba and all of Our America.”

This resolution reiterates that “Puerto Rico constitutes a Latin American and Caribbean nation, with its own and unmistakable national identity, which Puerto Ricans have been able to defend despite the long colonization process to which they have been subjected.”

Likewise, it recognizes that, in the context of the significant worsening of the economic and fiscal crisis in Puerto Rico, the current status prevents the Puerto Rican people from making sovereign decisions to address their needs and define their future, especially to address the serious economic and social problems that affect them.
