Banjul, May 4, 2017. Professor Dr. Faqir Muhammad Anjum Chaudhry, Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia, visited the embassy in Cuba and held a working meeting with the Cuban ambassador to that African nation, Lázaro Herrera Martínez. Dr. Faqir was accompanied by Professor Ousman Nyan, Provost of the School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences of the aforementioned university.
During the meeting, visitors highly appreciated the work done by the Cuban health collaborators working in Gambia, as well as the outstanding role played by the island's group of professors teaching at the School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences of the higher education center.
They also addressed issues related to the newly young Gambian doctors graduated under the New Community Based Medical Program beginning in this country in 2008 at the initiative of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, with the support of former President Yahya Jammeh and developed by Cuban professors under the auspices of ELAM (Latin American University of Medicine). These doctors will increase the ranks of the Gambian health professionals, who are mostly trained by Cuba and Venezuela, and in this case, are designed to ensure that health services reach the most remote corners of the Gambian geography.
