Kingston, Jamaica, 17 August 2020. The Solidarity Movement with Cuba in Jamaica celebrated this Sunday the 94th Anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro Ruz. A combination of creativity and the will to honour the Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolution, was the key to overcoming the physical distancing imposed by Covid-19 and developing a wide, varied, political-cultural activity via Internet, attended by about 20 speakers and marked by the projection of videos about Fidel and his relationship with Jamaica and the performance of prestigious artists.
The ‘Antonio Maceo’ Association of Cuban Residents in Jamaica (ACRJ), represented by its Vice president Osvaldo Cárdenas Junquera, did not disregard the invitation. In his remarks Osvaldo, who was a member of the July 26 Movement and a diplomat after the triumph of the Revolution, recalled the historical importance of Fidel's leadership for the victory of the rebel forces against Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship. He also highlighted the fundamental role of the Commander-in-Chief and his people in achieving the 1959’s revolutionary triumph, and in the battle to develop the country amidst constant aggressions by the US imperialism.
The political-cultural activity lasted about two hours and was also attended by representatives of political and social organizations from Jamaica and the Cuban State Mission in this country. Among speakers stood out recorded messages from former Jamaican Prime Minister, the Most Honourable Percival James Patterson and the Hero of the Republic of Cuba and President of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples, Fernando González Llort.
