The Dano-Cuban Association expresses its disagreement with the news of April 30, 2020 about an armed attack against the Cuban Embassy in Washington DC, USA. USA
A citizen of Cuban origin in the United States fired 32 shots at the Embassy, something that less you can say is that it is shocking. The news that this awful act has occurred just a few hundred meters from the White House is terrible.
Fortunately, there was only material damage in the attempt. All the employees and people who were at the Cuban Embassy in Washington have not been injured. The terrorist, an exiled Cuban named Alazo Baró, was arrested by the police minutes later.
The Dano-Cuban Association has been eagerly awaiting the reactions and information from the US authorities regarding the terrorist act and the arrested terrorist. But there is an ominous silence that contrasts sharply with the United States' response to terrorism. We are witnessing another example of the double standard with which the United States acts, prosecuting "evil terrorism" on the one hand, which only affects the interests of the United States, and on the other, acting as if there were "good terrorism", which is the one that affects in this case a country like Cuba seen by the United States as the enemy.
As friends of Cuba for many years we recognize this behavior. We recall how on September 12, 1998, the United States arrested five Cubans who were peacefully monitoring the activities of terrorist groups attacking Cuba from Florida. “The Cuban five” were sentenced to extremely long prison terms, while the Miami terrorists were released.
The Dano-Cuban Association condemns the silence and passivity of the American authorities. We fear that we may witness the terrorist's release again and that the punishment the guilty person deserves remains unpunished.
There is no good terrorism, and the United States is bound by international conventions and resolutions, adopted by the UN Security Council, to prevent, condemn, combat, and prosecute any terrorist act, and to work with other countries on this matter.
In this case, we understand that it is a serious fact that an Embassy has been the object of a terrorist act and that the United States, as a host country, has an obligation to protect it both physically and politically.
We require that the United States meet its obligations.
