The Cuban ambassador to Azerbaijan, Alfredo Nieves, spoke with the general director of the capital's Hospital Number One, in an appointment in which the work of the island's medical brigade was highlighted here, diplomatic sources indicated today.

Nieves spoke with the general director of the referred hospital, Ilham Gafar, with the deputy director, Huseyn Masimov, and directors of the Department of International Relations and Protocol of the State Agency for Compulsory Medical Insurance, known here as Tabib.

Both parties also referred to the positive impact that the 'Henry Reeve' Cuban Medical Brigade has had on Azeri soil just days into its work.

The direct impact of the presence of the Cuban brigade in increasing the quality of care provided was highlighted, as well as in reducing the risk of contagion in native medical personnel.

For his part, the ambassador recalled that during the meeting of the presidents of both countries in the framework of the XVIII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in this city, in October 2019, cooperation in health matters was a topic of special attention.

He underlined the impulse for bilateral ties, above all, for people-to-people contact, of the presence here of Cuban doctors.

The diplomat took the opportunity to invite the counterpart to scientific and medical events in Cuba such as the 'Health for All' Convention, as well as the twinning between hospitals.

The meeting addressed, also with the presence of Doctor Dalsy Torres, head of the Medical Brigade, and the second secretary of the Cuban Foreign Ministry Liset Camacho Vivó, the protocols of care and Cuban biotechnological medicines, some unique in the world.

Gafarov and Masimov thanked, for their part, the presence of Cuban doctors in a health center with so much history and tradition, as well as explained the layout and operation of the hospital.

They also expressed their admiration for the dedication that the island's medical staff, along with Azeri colleagues, show to the noble work of saving lives.

On the 13th, next to the 94th birthday of the late historical leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, the 42nd Cuban Medical Brigade 'Henry Reeve' will celebrate its first month in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in this Caucasian country.
