Harare, April 8, 2025—Cuba and Zimbabwe today advocated for strengthening media cooperation from the Global South during a meeting between the Ambassador, Her Excellency Ms. Susellys Pérez Mesa, and the Vice Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting, Hon. Dr. Omphile Marupi.
The need to tell the truth in their own language and sources, to combat disinformation and to defend history, marked the cordial dialogue held at the headquarters of the Cuban Mission in this capital.
The exchange was an opportune setting to reiterate the reciprocal willingness to strengthen existing ties between the media of both countries in the face of the challenges posed by the globalization of fake news and the manipulation promoted by the major hegemonic news axes.
The Ambassador and Deputy Minister of Zimbabwe highlighted the progress made in bilateral cooperation, with the aim of taking new steps in the training of communications professionals and the use of technology.
Marupi considered her participation in the First Meeting of Ministers of Information and Social Communication, held in Havana in parallel with the Patria International Colloquium in mid-March, a great experience.
According to the Head of the Diplomatic Mission and the Zimbabwean Deputy Minister, current challenges require coordination to promote an integrative network from the Global South for the ethical use of social media and artificial intelligence in strategic emancipatory processes of security and sovereignty.
Cuba and Zimbabwe are suffering the consequences of campaigns that manipulate their realities, primarily targeting younger generations, Pérez Mesa and Marupi stated at the meeting attended by the Minister Counselor of the Embassy, Luis Enrique González Acosta.
They also planned actions to sign agreements that promote greater exchanges and visits between the media and professionals, as well as opportunities for joint training.
