Harare, September 17, 2026 – The Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Trust (ZAST) today highlighted the inclusion of a statement opposing the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba in the Declaration of the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi, India, on September 12.
ZAST stated that it welcomes and firmly supports the position expressed by BRICS leaders, who voiced deep concern regarding the tightening of blockade measures against the Caribbean island and the documented effects on its economy, energy supply, and humanitarian situation.
According to the Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Trust, the decision to insist on the need to end these economic, commercial, and financial measures—within the framework of the broader principles of sovereign equality, international law, multilateralism, and the right to development—is significant.
The statement notes that the majority of countries express opposition to unilateral and secondary sanctions due to their potential consequences for human rights, health, and food security.
As an organization established to defend against the adverse effects of sanctions on Zimbabwe and to promote international solidarity against unilateral coercive measures, ZAST expressed its solidarity with the people and government of Cuba.
It also highlighted the BRICS position supporting Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace based on mutual respect, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and non-interference.
The New Delhi Declaration represents an important reaffirmation of the principle that international economic relations should promote development and cooperation.
ZAST calls upon governments, civil society organizations, academics, and grassroots organizations across Africa and the Global South to continue a constructive dialogue regarding the humanitarian and developmental consequences of unilateral coercive measures.
We also encourage greater South-South cooperation, solidarity, and collective advocacy for a just and representative international system, alongside the immediate end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by Washington more than six decades ago.
