Zimbabwe-Cuba: 45 Years of Brotherhood

Harare, April 20, 2025 - Cuba and Zimbabwe commemorated the establishment of diplomatic relations 45 years ago, just two days after the African nation's declaration of independence on April 18, 1980.
The commemoration of this event was the occasion for a cordial meeting between diplomats from the Cuban mission and executives and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
The excellent state of bilateral relations, the desire to identify new areas of cooperation, and the need to strengthen economic and commercial ties were discussed by the Cuban Ambassador, Her Excellency Susellys Pérez Mesa, with Rofina Chikava, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both parties agreed on the importance of passing on to young people the legacy of historical generations and the bonds of brotherhood that date back to before Zimbabwe's independence.
The experienced Zimbabwean diplomat acknowledged Cuba's sustained contribution to her country in key areas such as health and education, with more than 3,000 graduates on the island and doctors providing their services here uninterruptedly since 1987.
Chikava also reiterated her support for the Caribbean nation's priority issues.
Also attending the meeting on the Zimbabwean side were the Minister of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, Mqabuko Spencer Dube, and the Deputy Directors of Diaspora Investment, Edson Jr. Sithole, and of Europe and the Americas, Charles Chishiri, among others.
The Cuban Ambassador was accompanied by Minister Counselor Luis Enrique González Acosta and Second Secretary Zailin Gaulhiac Moragues.
