Cuban Foreign Minister exchanges with the US legal community on the new Family Code.

New York, September 27, 2022. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla met today with representatives of different US legal and civic organizations, with whom he discussed the recently approved Cuban Families Code.

The Minister offered details about the result of the popular referendum that ratified the Code and the benefits that this represents for current Cuban society. For his part, Ambassador Yusnier Romero Puentes, Alternate Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, made a presentation on the main milestones of the new Code.

New Family Code approved in Cuba by 66.87% of valid votes

Havana, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) The president of the National Electoral Council (CEN) of Cuba, Alina Balseiro, reported today that the Family Code was ratified with 3,936,700 votes in favor in the Sunday referendum, representing 66.87 percent of the valid votes.

The official said that 6,251,786 turned out to vote, which represents 74.01 percent of the electorate of 8,447,467 people. The number of valid ballots rose to 5,891,705.

Cuban Head of Mission holds exchange on gender equality with UN Women Representative in Liberia.

Monrovia, September 13, 2022 - Gender equality and women's empowerment is a topic that is very much addressed in Liberia, on which the Head of Mission Mercedes L. Martinez Herrera had the opportunity to exchange with Mrs. Comfort Lamptey, UN Women Representative in the West African country.

Cuba was the first country to sign the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women at the United Nations and the second to ratify it.

President of Cuba highlighted the legal value of the Family Code

Havana, Sep 7. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stressed today that the new Family Code encourages affection as a legal value, a novel aspect of this law that will go to a popular referendum on September 25.

The #FamilyCode implies something very novel: affection as a legal value. That is why it has been called the Code of Affection. It has an undisputed ethical value, it teaches us to think and gives us the reins to educate future generations. #CódigoSi (#CodeYes),” the Cuban president wrote on Twitter.

A Code consistent with the development of the family

In the twenty-fifth, and latest, draft version of the Family Code, 47.93% of the content was modified, including the transitory and final provisions; and new elements were incorporated, representing 2.06%, reported the Minister of Justice Oscar Silvera Martinez.

In a videoconference of the Drafting Commission of the Family Code with the deputies of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP), the Minister highlighted the real impact the opinion of the people had in this consultation process, which he described as "transparent and effective".

Cubans Living Abroad To Participate In Family Code Consultation

On Wednesday, Cuba's Foreign Affairs Ministry Consular Services Director Ernesto Soberon announced that his office enabled an online form for about 1,3 million Cubans living abroad to participate in the citizen consultation of the new Family Code.

“These citizens will be able to comment on the bill articles by entering the website www.nacionesyemigración.cu in such period,” Soberon explained, recalling that a similar exercise was successfully carried out in 2018 when the Constitution draft was discussed.

Family Code contains issues of interest for Cubans abroad

The draft bill of the new Family Code to be debated in Cuba from February to April will contain issues such as the flow of travelers and the transnationality of the Cuban family, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Friday.

Ernesto Soberon, general director of of Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents Abroad Department at the Foreign Ministry, stressed in Facebook that due to their experiences on living in Cuba and in other societies, the Cuban residents abroad will make an important contribution to the debate of the legal body.
