71 UNGA: Cuba at the general debate of the 10th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Mr. President,

We note with satisfaction that the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has entered its second decade with 174 States Parties. My delegation encourages all States not yet party to the Convention to accede it or ratify it, as appropriate.

71 UNGA: Cuba on item: “Improving the financial situation of the United Nations”, during the Second resumed session of the Fifth Committee.

Madam Chair,

First of all, allow us to convey the satisfaction of our delegation to see you presiding over our work at the 71st session and to acknowledge the work that you and your team have developed under the chairmanship of the Fifth Committee. I reiterate the cooperation of the Cuban delegation to successfully undertake our work.

71 UNGA: Statement by the Cuban delegation at the exchange of views on the institutional arrangements of the instrument, United Nations Conference.

Madam Chair,

We reiterate our appreciation for conducting the work of this Conference.

With regard to the institutional arrangements of the legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination, the Cuban delegation would like to highlight, inter alia, the following elements:

71 UNGA: Cuba at exchange of views on the main prohibitions: effective legal measures, provisions and regulations of the instrument, UN Conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading to their total elimination.

Madam Chair,

Since I am taking the floor for the first time, I would like to congratulate you on your election and wish you success in this Conference.

Cuba considers that an instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons should include, inter alia, the following provisions:

• To categorically prohibit the possession, production, development, testing, acquisition, stockpiling, transfer, deployment, stationing, use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.

• To prohibit any activity related to military or other preparations for the use of nuclear weapons.

Statement by the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations at the High Level Segment of the United Nations Conference to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons.

Madam Chair,

My delegation endorses the statement by El Salvador on behalf of CELAC and wishes to congratulate you on being elected Chair of this important United Nations Conference, as well as the other members of the Board. You can count on the commitment and cooperation of Cuba.

71 UNGA: Statement by the Cuban delegation at the Fifth Committee under item “Proposed Program Project for the Biennium 2016-2017” and Thematic Cluster: “Special and Personal Envoys and Special Advisers of the Secretary-General.”

Mr. Chairman,

We thank Controller Ms. Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas, Assistant Secretary-General, for her presentation of the Secretary-General´s reports on the estimates in respect with special political missions, good offices and other political initiatives authorized by the General Assembly or the Security Council. We likewise thank Mr. Carlos Ruiz Massieu for the related reports of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions.
