Westmoreland, Jamaica, 1 May 2022. This April, Cuba “went back” to Petersfield, a town located in the parish of Westmoreland, in the western region of Jamaica. The local chapter of the Jamaica‑Cuba Friendship Association (JCFA) celebrated this year for the thirteenth time the national function in salute to Cuba's victory of Playa Girón against the mercenary invasion.
This celebration is the first to be organized after the start of Covid‑19 and the passing of Matthias Brown, a dear friend of Cuba and leader of the solidarity movement in the region. A well-deserved tribute to him was paid at the event.
The function was attended by the Hon. George Wright, Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, Professor Trevor Brown, president of the JCFA, and Dr. José Armando Arronte, coordinator of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Jamaica. Ulises Calvo, head of the Consular Office of the Embassy of Cuba, represented the diplomatic mission. Leaders and members of the solidarity movement with Cuba in Jamaica, residents of the community and cooperants of the Cuban medical and educational brigades stationed in the region were present.
The representative of the Embassy gave the main remarks of the event, and concluded by expressing: “Tomorrow 1st of May, millions of Cubans will flood the streets in every province to march in support of the Revolution and celebrate the International Workers Day. It will be a moment of joy for our people, but the battle is far from over. The enemy remains strong and decided to isolate us and make us fail. But they won’t succeed as long as we have friends like you, who share our dreams of a better future for all. 61 years after Girón, our cause is still fair and worthy. The imperialism, wounded in its pride by our stubborn resistance, is getting anxious and desperate. To give up now, would be to betray those who died for us. The only way ahead for us is the one pointed out by Che Guevara: Ever onwards to victory!”
