Press Release: Cuba participates in the opening of the High-level UN Conference on the Oceans.

New York, 5 June 2017.The High-Level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”, was inaugurated today within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly, coinciding with the celebration of World Environment Day.

The Cuban delegation, headed by the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Environment Ministry (CITMA), José Fidel Santana Nuñez, participated today in the Conference’s inauguration session. The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales was one of the main speakers at the opening of the General Debate, who accompanied by other representatives of the Bolivian State held a brief and friendly dialogue with the Cuban Deputy Minister and his delegation. During this meeting the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander Fidel Castro Ruz and his historical legacy were remembered.

On behalf of Cuba, the Deputy Minister Santana Nuñez will address the General Debate of the Conference next Wednesday, 7 July and will participate, jointly with his delegation, in the different exchange scenarios provided by the Conference from 5 – 9 June.

The Cuban State currently implements its plan of action “Tarea Vida” (Life Task) to face climate change, featuring a set of measures counteracting negative effects in the most vulnerable areas, ensuring the availability and efficient use of water in order to mitigate drought; guarantee maximum protection of soil and water through reforestation efforts; rehabilitate, conserve and prevent the deterioration of coral reefs; as well as implementing other measures through programs, plans, and projects linked to renewable energy, energy efficiency, food security, health, and tourism.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), responsible for implementing and managing initiatives in the State Plan to tackle with climate change, outlines actions to increase the populations’ awareness and knowledge around the issue and its associated risks, as well as their participation in combating the phenomena.
