UN General Assembly adopts resolution establishing September 16 as the International Day of Science, Technology and Innovation for the South.

New York, January 10th, 2024.- With the adoption today by consensus by the United Nations General Assembly of resolution, A/78/L.34 on the International Day of Science, Technology and Innovation for the South, the member countries of the UN, recognize the role of technical scientific advances in all areas of human life for the fulfillment of the SDGs.

Minutes before the adoption, Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, special coordinator for the Chairmanship of Cuba of the G-77 and China, highlighted in a speech the emphasis that the draft resolution places on the key role of scientific-technical advances in economic growth and sustainable development, through the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, as well as the political declaration on the SDGs.

Likewise, Pedroso said that the document refers to the Summit on Science, Technology and Innovation of the Group of 77 and China, held in Havana and its Political Declaration, as an effort to promote cooperation in this area, as well as the promotion that makes the text of the need to create an open, inclusive and non-discriminatory environment that supports the efforts of the Global South to develop and strengthen their national science, technology and innovation systems.

Proclaiming September 16 as the International Day of Science, Technology and Innovation for the South is an important step to recognize, each year, that we must fulfill the promise of leaving no one behind and that the development of science , technology and innovation is also a fundamental lever for compliance with the SDGs and for building a more equitable and participatory world, even from scientific and technological platforms, a world that is both possible and necessary.

In his speech, Ambassador Pedroso thanked on behalf of the G77 and China for the support received from the United Nations Member States in the consultations held on the draft resolution.
