New York, 8 June 2017. The United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”, promotes the registration of initiatives, as Voluntary Commitments, of Member States.
Within this context, the Cuban Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, José Fidel Santana Núñez, and Head of the Delegation to the event, announced and registered the Caribbean nation’s voluntary commitments in support to the resulting document ‘Call for Action’, aiming at involving all in marine resource conservation activities and fulfilling the SDG 14 of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, devoted to oceans.
Cuba’s voluntary commitments refer to recover marine- coastal and aquaculture ecosystems through sustainable management; reduce pressure on coral reefs, sea grasses, mangroves and beaches, vulnerable to climate change and conserve 27% of marine and coastal areas, of major importance for biological diversity and ecosystem services, per ecologically representative protected areas that are effectively and equitably managed.
