Geneva, Switzerland. February 15- On the eve, while participating in the preparatory open consultation organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum, the Permanent Mission of Cuba in Geneva emphasized the importance and priority that should be given to this process, first in recognizing the so-called "digital divide" as a new dimension of economic and social divisions between countries, which impacts universal and equal access to knowledge and information.
The Forum will be held from May 27 to 31, 2024, at this multilateral venue. The event will be the occasion for a new general review of the implementation of the Summit outcomes 20 years after its first phase (WSIS+20).
During the consultations, ITU recognized the contribution made by the Summit of Heads of States and Governments of the G77 and China on "Today's Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation" to this process.
The G77 leaders and China, through the Havana Declaration, in paragraphs 13, 14 and 15, among other issues, reaffirmed the 2005 Tunis Agenda for the Information Society and called to ensure that the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20) General Review process, the Global Digital Pact and the Summit of the Future contribute to closing the digital divide between developed and developing countries.
Cuba will actively participate in these processes in favor of greater digital cooperation that facilitates and accelerates the development goals of the Global South and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
