New York, April 9, 2024.- Cuba was elected, this Tuesday, to the Social Development Commission for the period 2025-2029 and to the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Commission for the period 2025-2027, both subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
The Social Development Commission's main responsibility is to provide advice to the United Nations on social development issues. It plays a vital role in promoting social policies that support the overall development goals of the United Nations, particularly those related to the eradication of poverty, the advancement of social integration and the guarantee of full employment and decent work for all. .
Since the World Summit for Social Development held in Copenhagen in 1995, this commission has been the key United Nations body responsible for monitoring and implementing the Copenhagen Declaration and Program of Action.
For its part, the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPJ) acts as the main policy-making body of the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.
Among the mandates and priorities of the CCPCJ are to improve international action to combat national and transnational crime and the efficiency and equity of criminal justice administration systems. This commission also offers Member States a forum to exchange knowledge, experiences and information in order to develop national and international strategies and identify priorities to combat crime.
This new election in Cuba is evidence of the international community's recognition of our country's performance in these areas.
