Statement by the Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association in salute to May Day

On the occasion of May Day 2024, we pause to salute the struggle and contribution of our workers throughout the world, whose ‘brain and brawn’ are foundation on which our society’s are built and maintained. In particular, we offer a special solidarity to those whose day-to-day existence requires a constant struggle to keep their ‘heads above water,’ in enterprises that maximizes profit, while paying scant regards to the workers welfare.

In the current context of resetting the world order, from one which promotes hegemony, uni polarity, violation of international laws and convention, enshrined in their ‘might over right’ doctrine as exemplified by the US empire, to one that is built on respect for the inalienable rights of states to self-determination, sovereignty and the international solidarity.

We commend our sister country Cuba, for its role in providing a living proof, that another world is indeed possible, where the brotherhood of man trumps, the ‘dog eat dog’ disaster capitalism, despite been subjected to one of the most cruel and inhumane economic, financial and commercial blockade in human history by the government of the United States of America, which is made worse by a media campaign, that would make Josef Goebbels of Hitler’s Third Reich, a proud man.

Finally, it would be unforgivable if on this august occasion, recognized as the international day of the working class, for us not to offer our strongest solidarity and support to our brothers and sisters in Palestine, for having to endure daily massacre, horrific slaughter and a genocidal campaign against innocent people by an apartheid and settler colonial regime Israel, with the full complicity of the government of the United States of America.

Our brothers and sisters in Cuba and Palestine can continue to count on our unconditional support, as we are guided by the words of Bob Marley from the song ‘War,’ ‘we know we shall win, as we are confident in the victory of good over evil’.

The struggle continues
