Cuba reaffirms its commitment to the prohibition and total elimination of nuclear weapons at the Second Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Geneva, Switzerland - 22 July 2024. Cuba reaffirmed its commitment to the prohibition and total elimination of nuclear weapons at the opening today in Geneva of the Second Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The delegation to this event, which is due to last until 2 August, is headed by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Juan Antonio Quintanilla Román.

During the proceedings, Cuba will reiterate its firm commitment to the prohibition and total elimination of nuclear weapons, in a transparent, verifiable and irreversible manner and within multilaterally agreed timeframes. In line with these positions, Cuba will participate actively in the discussions and negotiations of this important meeting.

Speaking during the meeting's general debate, Ambassador Quintanilla Román stressed the importance of reaching a consensus that would lay the foundations for a successful 11th NPT Review Conference in 2026.

Cuba, together with the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), has always demanded the implementation of the provisions of Article VI of the NPT and of the second pillar of the treaty (nuclear disarmament) and has drawn attention to the crisis of credibility facing the non-proliferation regime. The Cuban delegation will recommend concrete actions.

Cuba is committed to ensuring the success of this Preparatory Committee and will continue to work hard to ensure that all States Parties to the NPT rigorously comply with their obligations, thereby promoting the achievement of a world free of nuclear weapons.
