Kingston, 9 October 2024. Organised by the Cuban state mission in Jamaica in conjunction with the Simon Bolivar Cultural Centre, a special Martian class was held in celebration of the 132nd anniversary of the arrival of our National Hero in Jamaica and the 156th anniversary of the beginning of the struggle for independence. Participating in the event were Jamaican, Cuban and Latin American students from the Jose Marti Technical High School, St. Aloysius Primary School, St. Hugh's High School and the YWCA; as well as members of the solidarity movement and Cuban residents.
As part of the activity, students from the Spanish Club of St. Aluysius Primary School gave an overview of the Apostle's stay in Jamaica, while Professor Osmani Reyes, a member of the Educational Brigade, dialogued with the students about the influence of Martí's ideology in the historical links that unite Cuba and Jamaica.
In his words to those present, the Ambassador of Cuba in Jamaica, Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, acknowledged the importance of Martí's visit to Jamaican territory in the preparation of the Necessary War. He reaffirmed the validity of Martí's Latin Americanist and anti-imperialist thoughts to confront the ‘giant of the seven leagues’ and the blockade imposed by the United States government against the Cuban people.
The moment was propitious for the donation to the Simón Bolívar Cultural Centre of a miniature replica of the house where the Apostle was born and two books related to the history of Cuba and Latin America.
