Press Release: Solidarity Movement with Cuba in New York celebrates National Rebellion Day

Nueva York, July 29, 2017. TheSolidarity Movement with Cuba in New York, gathered at the New York State Nurse Association, to celebrate the 64th anniversary of the assaults to the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Garrisons, accompanied by members of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations. The event was co-sponsored by pro-Cuban groups based in New York, like CubaSi, July 26 Coalition and Casa de las Americas.

Standing among the multiple members of solidarity groups who participated in the activity were: Sloan of Universal Zulu Nation, who has painted on Cuba and Fidel Castro; Sonia Harris, from the New York State Nurse Association, who has travelled to Cuba to learn about the island´s public health system; and the musicians Judy Gorman and DJ Verseti.

Ike Nahem, representative of the July 26 Coalition, condemned the US blockade on Cuba and summoned to participate in the rally to support Cuba in the next months. He also remembered August 13th,  birth of Fidel Castro, Historical Leader and  eternal Commander in Chief;  now a historical and transcendental date for all Cubans. He pointed out that the date is a new opportunity to express the legitimacy of the Cuban political system.

Finally, Mrs. Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, paid tribute to the Generation who did not let the Apostle die in the Year of his Centenary and turned his thought into action, making Cubans a free and sovereign people. At the same time, she thanked the solidarity movement for their continuous support to Cuba and its Revolution.

The Cuban diplomat also referred to the unwavering decision of the Cuban people to keep improving its socialist national project, even when the US government has strengthen, once again, its policy against the island and the drawback to years of hostility, confrontation and denial of Cuba´s achievements in terms of democracy and human rights.

Two pictures were shown in the meeting. One was on Fidel Castro and his explanation on the necessity of the armed struggle in 1953. The second material revealed a conference given by Fernando Gonzalez Llort, Chairman of ICAP, during the 5th Continental African Conference on Solidarity with Cuba, on the island’s role in African countries’ independence and its present day support in health and educational fields.
