The US State Department's decision to remove Cuba from the list of state that sponsor terrorism is a victory for the Cuban people! We will continue to fight together with the anti-imperialist people for the protection of the Cuban revolution - Wimal Weerawansa, Chairman, National Freedom Front
The entire membership of the National Freedom Front was delighted to read the announcement issued on January 14, 2025, that the US State Department has taken steps to remove Cuba from their list of state sponsors of terrorism. We, as Sri Lankan nationalists who believe in socialism, are political activists who have been encouraged by the victory of the Cuban revolution.
Although Cuba is thousands of miles away from our homeland, the people who lived there, led by great leaders like Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, achieved the victory of the Cuban Revolution. Today's Cubans have never actually seen those leaders, but their commitment to defending the Cuban revolution strengthens our morale.
The entire Cuban people, who faced great hardships without electricity for days, gathered in Havana and told the entire world that the Cuban Revolution was irreversible, causing hardships for the Cuban people. Although the American imperialists understood that the entire anti-imperialist people had raised their voices for the defense of Cuba at every possible opportunity, we understand that even the US State Department was stimulated by the militancy and patriotism shown by the Cuban people who gathered in Havana at the most difficult time.
The statement issued by the US State Department on January 14, 2025, is limited in scope regarding Cuba. However, we read that this decision is a decision that directs the US attitude towards Cuba in the right direction and is a response to the persistent and persistent request made by the Cuban government and people.
It is true that the decision taken by the US State Department ends certain coercive measures that seriously harm the Cuban economy and have a profound impact on the survival of the Cuban people. Likewise, this embargo has always been a problem in all official exchanges between Cuba and the US government, and we see it as a turning point.
However, we emphasize that the economic blockade and tens of thousands of coercive measures implemented to further strengthen the sanctions imposed by the US State Department on Cuba since 2017 are still in force. We also emphasize that the blockade has a completely extraterritorial effect and violates international law and the human rights of all Cubans.
Similarly, we call on the humanitarian American people to force the US government to abandon the economic blockade, misery, hunger and despair that US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Lester Mallory proposed in 1960 regarding Cuba, and to bring the Cuban people to their knees.
We also emphasize to all anti-imperialist people that as long as the aforementioned theory remains as US state policy, the limited concessions granted by the US State Department regarding Cuba may be reversed tomorrow.
We emphasize that we will lead the membership of the National Liberation Front and its affiliated organizations to fight together with the anti-imperialist people of the world, taking the slogan we have pointed out as the basis.
