At the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU), the Heads of State and Government adopted a resolution condemning, for the sixteenth consecutive time, the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.
In addition, the document calls once again for Cuba to be removed from the unilateral list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism and expresses deep concern about the extraterritorial impact of the blockade, particularly the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act.
The AU stresses that these sanctions have aggravated the situation of the country in a context marked by natural disasters and economic difficulties. It also reaffirms the historical ties of brotherhood and solidarity between Africa and Cuba, and its commitment to the elimination of this unilateral policy that violates international law and the human rights of the Cuban people. This support takes on even greater importance in the face of renewed pressure from the US, which under Donald Trump's administration has reactivated economic warfare measures against the island.
With this resolution, the African Union joins the call of the international community to demand an immediate end to the blockade and reaffirms its unwavering support for Cuba.
