Geneva, Switzerland, 7 April 2025. The First Deputy Minister of Communications, Comrade Ernesto Rodríguez Hernández, heads the Cuban delegation attending the 28th Session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, which begins today in this city.
The delegation also includes Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations at Geneva, Madelyn Rodríguez Lara, Counsellor, Juan Alonso González, adviser at the Ministry of Communications, and Rachel Velázquez Chardi, official from the Directorate-General for Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Cuban representation will deliver several presentations during the event, including at the ministerial roundtable on "The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation in Advancing Sustainable, Inclusive, Science-Based and Evidence-Based Solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals to Leave No One Behind."
Cuba's experience will also be showcased during the high-level session on "Progress Made in the Implementation and Follow-up of the Outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society at Regional and International Levels, Including Its Review After 20 Years."
The Cuban delegation will have a full work slate, including meetings with senior officials from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as well as bilateral meetings with delegations from other nations. The First Deputy Minister will deliver a keynote lecture at an event organised by the South Centre, where he will address highly relevant and current topics, such as Cuba's digital transformation policy, its strategy for the development and use of artificial intelligence, and its perspective on the Global Digital Compact and Data Governance.
The Cuban representatives will also participate in consultations and negotiations on resolutions to be adopted during this Commission session, related to "Assessing Progress Made in the Implementation and Follow-up of the Outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society" and "Science, Technology and Innovation for Development."
The Commission on Science and Technology for Development is a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council and the United Nations focal point for science, technology and innovation for development.
