Cuban Ambassador Participates in ANZAC Day Commemoration in Wellington

Wellington, 25 April 2025 – The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, took part this Friday in the official ANZAC Day commemoration ceremony at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington, alongside local authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, and New Zealand citizens.

ANZAC Day—one of the most solemn and meaningful dates on New Zealand’s national calendar—honours the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who fought and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations in which both nations have been involved. The commemoration has its origins in the tragic Gallipoli campaign during the First World War, where thousands of ANZAC troops lost their lives.

The Cuban Ambassador’s participation in this significant occasion represents a gesture of respect towards the people of New Zealand and a tribute to the universal values of peace, sacrifice, and historical memory. His presence also reaffirms the ties of friendship and cooperation between Cuba and New Zealand, based on dialogue, mutual understanding, and a shared commitment to diplomacy as a path to peaceful conflict resolution.

The ceremony, rich in symbolism, included the performance of national anthems, the laying of wreaths, and a moment of silence in honour of the fallen. The traditional phrase “Lest We Forget” echoed powerfully among those present, serving as a reminder of the importance of preserving collective memory and building a future rooted in peace.

The Embassy of Cuba expresses gratitude to the Government and people of New Zealand for the invitation to participate in this national commemoration and reaffirms its commitment to promoting peace, mutual respect among nations, and international solidarity.
