Malaysia maintains a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy, where His Majesty the King is the head of state.
The Malaysian Parliament is bicameral, with a House of Representatives or the People's Assembly as its lower house, with 222 members elected every five years, each representing a parliamentary constituency; and a Senate or upper house with 70 senators. The parties with the largest number of elected members can form a federal government to govern the country.
The Senate is composed of two categories: 26 members elected by the State Legislative Assembly to represent 13 states (each state represented by two members), and 44 members appointed by Her Majesty on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
