The Communist Party of Sri Lanka expresses its unwavering solidarity with the revolutionary government and people of the Republic of Cuba, who once again face renewed imperialist pressure from the United States on the eve of the United Nations General Assembly vote demanding an end to the illegal blockade imposed on the country for over six decades.
The blockade -the longest in modern history - constitutes an act of economic warfare aimed at punishing the Cuban people for exercising their sovereign right to choose socialism. This policy of collective punishment has inflicted over USD 150 billion in damages, denying Cuba access to essential goods, trade, and development.
In recent weeks, the United States government has intensified its coercive tactics - threatening sovereign nations to alter their traditional votes at the United Nations. Such maneuvers are not only undemocratic but represent an assault on the right of nations to make independent foreign policy decisions.
The Communist Party of Sri Lanka reaffirms its full support for the resolution to end the blockade against Cuba, and calls upon all progressive and democratic forces, trade unions, and mass organizations in Sri Lanka and internationally to raise their voices in solidarity with Cuba and against imperialist aggression.
Long live socialist Cuba! Down with U.S. imperialism!
