From the land of Maurice Bishop, Fidel is remembered
St. George, November 25, 2025. With the presence of the Governor-General of Grenada, Her Excellency Dame Cecile Le Granada, the Acting Prime Minister, the Honorable Phillip Telesford, the Chancellor, the Honorable Joseph Andall, and representatives of Grenadian society, the National Museum of Grenada hosted the commemorative event for the 9th anniversary of the death of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
The Cuban Ambassador to the Island, Ivette Martínez Leyva, emphasized in her remarks that Fidel taught his people that the Revolution is not a date, nor a speech, but an attitude. It is raising one's voice in the name of justice, not accepting imperial threats, and knowing that the battles of our friends are our battles. That is why Cuba shed its blood on this land in 1983 and continues to provide medical services and technical assistance to the sister people of Grenada.
The words of Mr. Malachy Dottin, speaking on behalf of the graduates in Cuba, and of Claris Charles, former Ambassador of Grenada to Cuba, were also deeply moving. Both highlighted Fidel Castro's contributions to Cuba and the world, and the need to ensure his legacy continues to grow.
Dr. Oliver Benoit, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Grenada National Museum, was pleased to host this commemorative event honoring a figure who understood the importance of culture and ideas. He commented on the technical assistance project with the Cuban Heritage Council and expressed his confidence that Fidel Castro would also support it for the benefit of the history and culture of the Grenadian people.
Before the screening of the documentary "Fidel is Fidel" by filmmaker and photographer Roberto Chile, those present enjoyed the song "Riding with Fidel." It was impossible not to feel grateful for the work of this leader, whose legacy, in the year of his centenary, will not be forgotten by his people.
