New York, December 2nd, 2025. – Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, spoke during today’s General Assembly debate on agenda items 34 and 35: “The situation in the Middle East” and “The question of Palestine”. The diplomat denounced the collective punishment, extreme cruelty, and systematic violations committed by Israel against the Palestinian people for more than seven decades of colonial occupation.
Ambassador Soberón Guzmán warned of the devastating humanitarian situation in the occupied territory, marked by the deliberate deprivation of food, medicine, electricity, and basic services. He condemned the violation of the ceasefire agreement, the prohibition of UNRWA operations by Israeli, and the military incursions in the West Bank that have resulted in fatalities, injuries and hundreds of detentions. He reaffirmed that these actions are perpetuated when covered by the immunity granted through the political, military and financial support of the United States government.
During his speech, the Permanent Representative presented alarming figures: more than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 170,000 have been wounded in the last two years, and more than one million have been displaced. He highlighted that 70% of victims in Gaza are children and women, evidence of the genocidal nature of the Israeli offensive and the deliberate collapse of the Palestinian health system.
Cuba reiterated its unconditional support for Palestine’s full admission as a United Nations Member State, noting that the Security Council’s failure to ensure this right violates the will of the international community. The Ambassador emphasized the necessity of the two-state solution with an independent Palestine within the pre-1967 borders, East Jerusalem as its capital, and the right of return for refugees.
Finally, Ambassador Soberón Guzmán condemned Israeli aggression against other countries in the region, including the illegal occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights. He warned that such attempts to reconfigure the Middle East by force violate the UN Charter and perpetuate instability. He urged the international community to take urgent action to stop the genocide, respect the sovereignty of states, and restore peace and security to the Middle East.
