Cuban Son practice has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Singapore, December 31, 2025. The practice of the Cuban Son was included on December 10th in the representative list of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a recognition of this expression of the culture and identity of the Cuban people.

With this decision, notified at the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of UNESCO's Intangible Heritage, in New Delhi, the commitment of the Cuban Government to the protection of the traditions that represent the roots of the Caribbean nation is also highlighted.

After learning of the decision, the president of the National Cultural Heritage Council, Sonia Pérez, said that the news will be celebrated as a well-deserved tribute to the creativity and joy of an entire people.

Also, as recognition to all the soneros of Cuba and the world and to so many bearers who have kept alive and latent one of the most robust traditions of the national cultural heritage.

The Son, is a musical and dance tradition, is a symbol of Cubanness, which transcends borders and a living, current and deeply rooted expression in the heart of the nation.

Today, he emphasized, we celebrate its universal value and reaffirm the commitment of the Cuban State and Government to its preservation, promotion and safeguarding for present and future generations.

Finally, he welcomed the new inscriptions on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, especially those from Latin America and the Caribbean, which reaffirm the richness, diversity and resilience of the region's cultures.

Since its birth in the eastern region of Cuba, this musical-dance genre constitutes one of the basic expressions of Cuban music, and is a combination of African and Hispanic music.

It reached its greatest peak in the 20s of the last century, with the emergence and development of commercial radio broadcasting and was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2012.

With its inclusion in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it joins other indigenous expressions such as the rumba, the Cuban point, the French tumba, the parrandas of central Cuba and the bolero.
