Madam President:
Cuba associates itself with the statement made by Iraq on behalf of the G77 and China.
The world is undergoing a complex situation. Multilateralism is eroding while conflicts and geopolitical tensions are proliferating, genocide in Gaza is perpetuating, and threats to peace and security are growing.
The United States is withdrawing from multiple United Nations entities, attacking sovereign nations militarily, and openly declaring its imperialist and fascist intentions to dominate our region and the world.
We reiterate our strongest condemnation of the U.S. military aggression against Venezuela and reaffirm our support and solidarity with that sister nation and its government. This cowardly aggression violates international law, the UN Charter, and the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
In light of this challenging scenario, we reaffirm the importance of the UN, particularly the General Assembly, which is the organization's most representative body. There, we all have an equal voice and vote. In this spirit of dialogue and cooperation, the following should be considered as priorities by the UN General Assembly (UNGA):
- Stop the paradigm of war and coercion, and advocate tirelessly for a world of peace where social justice and respect for cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity prevail.
- Eradicate the root causes of conflict and address structural inequalities, poverty, and underdevelopment, and put an end to colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.
- Address the reform of the current international economic order and its financial architecture, which currently exclude developing nations.
- Address the exponential growth of external debt of South countries, which has already been paid back in full.
- Facilitate a renewed commitment to the 2030 Agenda, less than five years ahead of its deadline for fulfillment, and foster commitments on financing and official development assistance.
- Promote more inclusive and democratic artificial intelligence governance to prevent its use in ways contrary to peace and international law.
- Promote equal access for the countries of the South to scientific and technical development.
- Address human rights issues based on cooperation and respect for each country's right to choose its political, economic, and social system without interference, politicization or double standards.
- Ensure that the UN80 initiative responds to member states’ priorities while preserving United Nations’ intergovernmental nature.
- Advocate for a world without cruel blockades or unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law.
A firm and renewed commitment to multilateralism is urgently needed, for the sake of present and future generations. The international community can count on Cuba in this endeavor.
Thank you
