Solidarity with Cuba from Mauritius

Port Louis, February 27, 2026 - Members of solidarity groups and friends of Cuba in Mauritius expressed their support today to the Cuban Ambassador, Her Excellency Susellys Pérez Mesa, for the Caribbean island in its struggle against the blockade imposed by the United States.

Some fifty representatives from various unions and the Friendship Association reaffirmed their support for the just struggle of the Cuban people against the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by Washington for more than six decades.

The President of the Employees Association, the main union in Mauritius, Prakach Baluckram, stated that the Caribbean nation is an example of justice, dignity, and humanism, but also—he said—of resilience, inspiring many around the world.

Mike Guddoy, coordinator of the friendship organization, addressed the current situation in the Caribbean country due to the tightening of the blockade and the executive order to prevent fuel supplies.

Cuba is not a threat; it sends doctors around the world and trains young professionals from many nations. The campaign and propaganda against it is unjustified and unfair, and it now needs everyone's help, Guddoy emphasized.

Stefan Gua, of the Resistance and Alternative Party, considered that the island represents a great deal to the international left, with a strong sense of internationalism, and highlighted its assistance in combating Ebola and COVID-19. Now, he added, it requires international solidarity and cannot remain alone.

The Ambassador, for her part, read a message sent by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, calling for strengthened solidarity at this time and in the context of the Centennial of the Historical Leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

Pérez Mesa gave a brief presentation on Cuba, bilateral relations in its 50th anniversary year, the consequences of the blockade and its reinforcement, as well as a call to support the just demands of the majority of the world against this inhumane policy.

She also reaffirmed the unwavering will of the Cuban people to continue on the path of sovereignty and independence chosen since 1959 and their commitment to just causes around the world.

Cuba is not alone and has Mauritius, which, although geographically distant, shares many similarities in its culture, human values, and vision as a people, the Ambassador emphasized.
