This morning, the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Mr. Aramis Fuente Hernández.
During the meeting, they discussed matters of common interest related to relations between both countries and their parliaments, as well as the complex situation in various regions of the world, with particular emphasis on the events in the Middle East that threaten international peace and stability.
Both Mr. Kaklamanis and Ambassador Fuente Hernández highlighted the bonds of friendship between Cuba and Greece, as well as the excellent level of relations and cooperation between their parliaments. They also referred to the important role played by the Friendship Groups of the two institutions in this regard and the contribution they can continue to make in the shared interest of further strengthening parliamentary ties. To this end, it was proposed to "hold meetings and visits to achieve a more solid framework for bilateral parliamentary relations."
The Speaker of Parliament recalled that, as is well known, "Greece consistently votes in favor of the United Nations General Assembly's annual resolution to lift the US economic blockade against Cuba, affirming that we will do the same in October 2026." The Ambassador acknowledged and thanked Greece for its support of said resolution against the blockade.
After thanking Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis for the meeting and his expressions of friendship and solidarity, the Ambassador provided a detailed account of the current situation in his country, especially as a consequence of the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade, which has been intensified unprecedentedly in recent weeks, and the negative impact it is having on various sectors of the country, as well as the economic and humanitarian damage it is causing to all of Cuban society.
Ambassador Fuente Hernández reiterated the invitation extended for an official visit to Cuba, which was accepted by the Speaker of the House, and whose details will be determined through diplomatic channels.
The meeting was attended by the Sixth Vice-President, Mr. Georgios Lamproulis; the President of the Greece-Cuba Parliamentary Friendship Group, Mr. Georgios Amyras; and the Diplomatic Advisor to the Speaker of the House, Ambassador Mr. Konstantinos Economides.
