Fijian Parliament Speaker Receives Cuban Ambassador

Suva, March 11, 2026. - The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Republic of Fiji, Nestor E. Torres Olivera, paid a courtesy call to the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Filimone Jitoko, at the Parliament building.

During the cordial meeting, Ambassador Torres Olivera expressed his gratitude for Fiji’s support regarding the UN General Assembly resolution against the blockade last October. He further briefed the Speaker on the challenging economic situation in Cuba, exacerbated by the intensified pressure and trade restrictions, particularly citing the impact of the executive order issued by President Donald Trump on January 29.

The Ambassador emphasized the Cuban government’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties, leveraging opportunities for cooperation across various sectors. Highlighting the success of Fijian doctors trained in Cuba who are currently serving in the country, he reaffirmed Cuba’s willingness to continue providing medical scholarships despite the current economic constraints.

Furthermore, he proposed strengthening inter-parliamentary relations by facilitating exchanges between legislators at international forums.

In response, the Speaker welcomed the Ambassador and underscored the strength of the current relationship, noting the mutual support both nations provide in international arenas, particularly concerning climate change and the blockade against Cuba. He acknowledged Cuba’s significant contributions to Fiji's healthcare workforce and expressed a strong interest in expanding cooperation into sports, specifically requesting Cuban expertise to train Fijian boxers.

The diplomatic ties between Cuba and Fiji, officially established on July 19, 2002, remain anchored in a foundation of mutual respect and sustained bilateral cooperation.
