Cuba and Grenada celebrate 47 years of diplomatic relations

April 14, 1979, marked the beginning of a relationship that has transcended time and circumstances: the friendship between Cuba and Grenada. Just one month after the triumph of the Grenadian Revolution, both countries decided to establish diplomatic ties that soon became an example of cooperation and solidarity in the Caribbean.

Since then, this collaboration has been expressed in multiple areas of national life. Cuba has supported Grenada in infrastructure projects, in the training of professionals, and in the development of sectors such as health, education, and sports.

The history of bilateral relations between these nations includes moments of sacrifice. The presence of Cuban internationalists in Grenada, and the human cost of the 1983 foreign intervention, are remembered as a symbol of commitment and fraternity. Facing those critical events together demonstrated the will of both countries to defend together the principles of justice and sovereignty.

Grenada, for its part, has extended a helping hand on numerous occasions, supporting Cuba in the face of natural disasters and standing with it in its struggle against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade. This constant support confirms that the solidarity between our nations is not circumstantial, but rather a commitment that is renewed at every stage of our shared history.

The exchange of official visits has been another pillar in strengthening bilateral ties. Meetings between leaders of both countries, from Fidel Castro and Maurice Bishop to the more recent visits of Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez to Grenada (2022) and Dickon Mitchell to Cuba (2024), have reaffirmed the shared will to keep this relationship alive and project it into the future.

Today, on the 47th anniversary of that historic step, Cuba and Grenada celebrate a solid friendship, which remains a benchmark for cooperation in the region and demonstrates that unity and solidarity are the foundation for overcoming any challenge.
