Geneva, Switzerland, April 27, 2026. The Cuban Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Rodolfo Benítez Verson, met with Geneva City Councilors Tobias Schnebli and Christian Steiner, who were among the main proponents of the resolution of solidarity and support for Cuba recently adopted by the Geneva City Municipal Council.
Under the resolution, Geneva will contribute 100,000 Swiss francs (approximately US$120,000) toward the purchase of solar panels to be installed in Cuban hospitals and polyclinics.
The resolution, titled “Energy for the Life of the Cuban People Subjected to a Total Economic and Energy Blockade,” was formally presented by the political groups Ensemble à Gauche and Union Populaire, with the support of other groups, such as the Workers' Party and the Geneva Citizens' Movement, and was approved by a large majority in the City Council.
The adopted initiative characterizes the unilateral economic and energy blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba as an illegal act, a violation of International Law.
The aid project will be implemented on the Island through the organization MediCuba-Switzerland, which is also headquartered in Geneva.
On behalf of the Cuban people and government, Ambassador Benítez Verson conveyed his deep gratitude to Christian Steiner and Tobias Schnebli, and to all the members and political groups of the Geneva City Council who gave their valuable support to this important act of solidarity, which will contribute to healing the sick and saving lives in Cuba and to the sustainable overcoming of the criminal and illegal energy blockade imposed by the United States government.
