An event in solidarity with Cuba and in homage to the 100th anniversary of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro was held in the Nea Smyrni Municipality, Athens.
The event, which included the presentation of the book “The Legacy of Fidel,” containing a selection of his last writings, was jointly organized by the aforementioned Municipality, the José Martí Cultural Association, and the “Taxideftis” publishing house. A large audience, eager to identify ways they could show and put their solidarity with the island of the Revolution into practice, filled the gardens of the Municipal Library, where the event took place.
The Mayor of Nea Smyrni, Mr. Giorgos Koutelakis, attended the event and, in a brief greeting, offered warm words of support and encouragement to the Cuban people. For his part, the Cuban ambassador, Aramís Fuente Hernández, highlighted the special importance of the book's publication and the fact that the first activity of the Library Garden Festival was dedicated to Cuba and its people, at a time when they face new threats and aggressions as a consequence of the unprecedented strengthening of the U.S. government's commercial, economic, financial, and energy blockade. The diplomat thanked the Mayor, the municipality of Nea Smyrni, and the participating public for their solidarity.
Also speaking were Kostas Papadopoulos, editor of the publishing house "Taxideftis"; Kostas Isychos, member of the Greek chapter of the REDH (Network for Human Rights); Vangelis Gonatas, representing the José Martí Cultural Association; and City Councilor Lázaros Kikidis.
