Film “El Sueño de Teresita” in New York makes impact of blockade visible in Cuban advances against Alzheimer’s disease.

New York, May 4, 2026 – The screening of the documentary film “El Sueño de Teresita” at the 26th Havana Film Festival New York highlighted the value of Cuban biotechnology and its contribution to the development of NeuroEPO, an innovative treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

The film was shown on May 3rd in Manhattan, with the presence of the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, accompanied by other officials and members of the Permanent Mission. The screening became a space for exchange and reflection on Cuba’s scientific advances and the challenges this sector continues to face.

The direct impact of the blockade imposed by the United States government was emphasized—particularly on the development, production, and access to innovative medicines, as well as on international scientific cooperation. In this context, reference was made to the measures announced on May 1st by the U.S. government, intended to further tighten the economic siege against Cuba.

Yurema Pérez, producer of Belly of the Beast, highlighted that the restrictions brought by this policy limit academic exchange and prevent patients in the United States and other countries from benefiting from treatments such as NeuroEPO (NeuralCIM), free from political conditioning.

Additionally, representatives from solidarity organizations, including the NY-NJ Cuba Sí Coalition, condemned the policy and called on the international community and the audience to actively reject its effects—especially those impacting the health sector and scientific research.

The audience greatly recognized this achievement of Cuban sciences and expressed interest in accessing these treatments, reiterating the need to eliminate the barriers that prevent their global reach and limit patients’ rights to enjoy the unrestricted benefits of medical advances.
