Cuba wins second place in regional chess tournament in Barbados.

Cuba was represented by International Masters Karla Fernandez and Abel Fabián González in the Central American and Caribbean U-20 Chess´s Championship hosted in Barbados. In the 6-day tournament, whose champions were the Barbadian Orlando Husbands (male) and the Trinidadian Gabriela Johnson (female), the Cuban athlete Karla won the second place, half a point from the first, being the only one to defeated the champion in their bilateral fight. For his part, his compatriot Abel finished in seventh place after marching between the first places until beyond half of the 9 rounds of the strong youth tournament in which 40 players of all the subregion participated. Barbados Chess Federation President, Allan Herbert, who appears in the photo along with Ambassador Francisco Fernandez and the two combative Cuban competitors, highlighted at the closing ceremony his pride because his pupil has reached the rule of Grand Master, his satisfaction with the excellent performance of the championship, as well as the high level of Cuban chess and its active participation and support in all tournaments in the region.
