Mr. Vice-President,
Cuba supports the Expert’s recommendation to establish a global solidarity coalition to defend peace.
This is urgent in a current international context in which the Charter of the United Nations and international law are being flagrantly violated, including the principles of sovereign equality, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the prohibition of the threat or use of force.
As highlighted in the Expert’s report, Cuba is an example of how the principles of the Charter are being undermined.
Our country is under the threat of direct military aggression by the Government of the United States and is being subjected to a ruthless economic blockade, including a brutal energy siege, with the aim of provoking a humanitarian catastrophe.
We express our appreciation for the numerous expressions of support and solidarity received from different parts of the world.
We recognize the commendable work of the Expert in preparing the updated draft Declaration on the Right to International Solidarity, as a result of broad and transparent consultations. We call on all States to support this initiative.
The Cuban delegation will submit, during this session, a draft resolution to renew this important mandate.
We urge all delegations, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to actively and constructively participate in the consultations on the draft.
Thank you very much.
