Islamabad, June 20, 2026. Welcoming poet Shahzad Sharjeel to the Cuban Embassy in this capital city brought to mind his opinion article “Hey, Cuba,” published in the newspaper “DAWN,” which, in light of Trump’s threats against Cuba.
Cuban Ambassador Damián Cordero Torres thanked him for his genuine solidarity with our country, particularly during such cruel times of an energy blockade and the intensification of the U.S. embargo, when even in the media the narrative woven about Cuba’s resilience to survive is not always fair. During their conversation, he also learned from Sharjeel himself about the humanistic legacy of his parents—their convictions regarding civic duty and ethics, their commitment to education, and the values that stand against neocolonial culture and the culture of window dressing. Hence his admiration for the Caribbean island, which is also rooted in the knowledge he demonstrated of its history.
There is no more accurate definition of his respect for Cuba than when, in the face of the threat imposed by the giant neighbor to the north, he leaves a stirring statement in his article: “The Cubans have a heart the size of America”—thus defining the greatness and spirit of solidarity of the Cuban people.
The esteemed poet also took an interest in cultural opportunities as part of the imperative exchange in that sphere between the two nations. This friend of Cuba will immediately join the team and take part in the activities commemorating the centenary of the Commander-in-Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz.
We at the Cuban Embassy thanked him for his visit and the fruitful exchange. As he took his leave, he took with him the book of poems *La verdad me nombra* (*The Truth Names Me*), by Antonio Guerrero, one of the Five Heroes, and a copy of *Guantánamo: Why the Illegal US Base Should Be Returned to Cuba*, with a foreword by Fidel. We reiterate to those who underestimate the value of dignity and ideas that Cuba is not alone!
