Dr. Nelvis Elaine Gómez Campos, coordinator of the National Program on Biological Diversity of the General Directorate of Environment at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Cuba, participated in the 28th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), an advisory group created by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to give the Conference of the Parties (COP) opinions on science and technology.
The meeting was held in Nairobi, Kenya, from July 27 to August 1, under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Subsequently, the Cuban expert was present at the 7th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on the implementation of the CBD, which took place at the same venue from August 4 to 12, 2026.
The representative of CITMA denounced the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the implementation of Cuba´s international environmental commitments. She also condemned the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed, for more than six decades, on Cuba by successive United States administrations, which constitutes a violation of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations. The expert stressed the US policy has a direct negative impact on the national implementation of the Convention and limits Cuba's capacities to advance in the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity.
