Mr. President,
Cuba reiterates its rejection of the punitive mechanism imposed on Burundi, as a result of an interventionist, selective and biased resolution adopted by this Council.
These mechanisms, which do not have the consent of the country concerned, have repeatedly proven to be ineffective. They have no real impact on the ground.
Far from promoting cooperation and respectful and constructive dialogue with national authorities, the only legitimate and effective way to advance the cause of human rights in any country, these impositions perpetuate confrontation and antagonism, squandering the limited financial resources of this body.
Attempts to undermine the sovereignty of Burundi and to impose external mechanisms on that country that disregard its national reality are unacceptable and incompatible with the Charter of the United Nations and international law.
We reiterate our call to respect the principles of impartiality, objectivity and non-interference in the sovereignty of States.
