New York— The Ambassador of Cuba to the United Nations, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, denounced on Monday, October 19, at UN Headquarters an anti-Cuban maneuver sponsored by the US government, in total violation of the rules governing the use of UN facilities.
Ambassador Soberón described it as a "clandestine meeting completely alien to the UN agenda" and expressed regret that the United Nations Secretariat had not prevented it from happening, despite repeated warnings from the Cuban delegation. The politically motivated anti-Cuban event featured a panel of individuals with proven links to terrorist organizations that have caused death and suffering to the Cuban people.
In the presence of representatives from Permanent Missions to the United Nations and members of civil society, the policy of collective punishment against the Cuban people and its extreme humanitarian consequences were condemned once again—particularly following the intensified energy pressure, which is equivalent to a naval blockade. This act of war prevents fuel supplies from reaching Cuba, for both commercial and humanitarian purposes, through direct threats, unilateral coercive actions, and even the harassment or intimidation of tanker vessels by US naval military forces.
This sham event against Cuba is part of the campaign of political harassment and intimidation launched by Washington several months ago to prevent the international community from raising its voice once again against the embargo this coming October 27 and 28, ahead of the vote on the resolution "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba."
"The US government knows full well that the vast majority of countries will once again support our demand, because Cuba is not a threat—the embargo is," stated the Cuban Ambassador.
