Rodríguez Abascal highlighted the work of the Revolution in the sports field, stressing the universal access to sport from early to oldest ages, including programs for special education and disabled centers. She added that a significant number of specialized Physical Education teachers have been trained in the island, who are responsible for implementing the Physical Culture and Health Development Strategy in all communities of the country. All this thanks to the political will of the Government and the active participation of the people, despite the obstacles imposed by the criminal blockade against Cuba, which has seriously constrained the development of sport.
She further pointed out that despite Cuba is a small developing country, over the last 58 years the country has had sustained achievements in sports at the regional and global level. Evidence of this is the fact that Cuban sport is first in Central America and the Caribbean, second in the American continent and number 18, on average, at the Olympic level, among more than 200 nations.
These results are also complemented with specialized centers for athletes training and a robust sports medicine system, which includes a modern anti-doping laboratory, recognized by the International Olympic Committee, which confirm Cuba´s commitment in fighting that scourge, she added.
The Permanent Deputy Representative of Cuba to the United Nations further noted that Cuba´s solidarity worldwide with coaches and physical education teachers also supports the prestige of Cuban sport.
