The Ambassador of Cuba to Ghana, Mr. Pedro Luis Despaigne González received at the Embassy a representation of student leaders of the National Union of Students of Ghana (NUGS), headed by its President, Mr. Frank Amoakene, who was elected to that position in November 2017.
The NUGS President highlighted the historical ties of the organization with the Embassy, explained the interest to expand the cooperation with the Cuban counterparts and requested information about the island political system and about the current state of US-Cuba relations.
The Ambassador, after explaining the role of young Cubans in supporting the revolutionary process, informed the visitor about the ongoing electoral process in Cuba, emphasizing the participatory character of the Cuban political system, and how progress has been made in the gender agenda within the Cuban society and in the Parliament in particular.
Regarding the relations with the US, the Cuban diplomat explained the historical roots of that power's interest in Cuba and discussed how the current administration of Donald Trump is reversing the progress in bilateral relations initiated by former President Barack Obama.
The visitors expressed their interest in deepening the studies in Ghana of Spanish language, and especially by the links between the medical students of both countries. The Ambassador, after highlighting that almost two thousand Ghanaians have been trained as professionals in Cuba, reiterated his country's commitment to Ghana and the African continent in general.
NUGS leaders announced their intention to travel to Cuba, since they wish to visit the young Ghanaians who study there and to exchange experiences with their Cuban counterparts.
NUGS President was accompanied by Mr. Salomon Ananpansah, Secretary of Programs and Projects, and Ms. Gertrude Aiddo, a Fourth Year medical student and member of the International Relations Committee. The First Secretary of the Embassy of Cuba, Julio César Sánchez, also participated in the meeting.
