MYANMAR, February 21, 2018.- In a solemn ceremony, the Ambassador of Cuba, Héctor Conde Almeida, presented in Nay Pyi Taw the Letters accrediting him as Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Htin Kyaw
In the cordial meeting, atended also by the Union Minister for International Cooperation and representatives of the Foreign Ministry of Myanmar, the two parties acknowledged the good path of bilateral relations and reiterated the mutual will to continue strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between both nations and peoples.
The President and the Cuban diplomat expressed satisfaction at the recent registration in Myanmar of two Cuban biopharmaceuticals for medical treatments against cancer and highlighted the potential of cooperation in fields such as education, health, biotechnology, agriculture, food security and direct bilateral trade for the benefit of the two peoples. The International Convention "CUBA-SALUD 2018" and "FIHAV 2018" were assessed as possible opportunities for further exchange.
The importance of maintaining close cooperation in the various multilateral fora was reaffirmed, among them those related to the achievement of the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals, promoting South-South cooperation; the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (NAM); the Paris Agreement on climate change, adopted in December 2015; as well as in the efforts of the international community to achieve the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
The Ambassador of Cuba thanked the President, the government and people of Myanmar, the support of that nation to the United Nations Resolution on the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government against Cuba.
Myanmar and Cuba have had diplomatic relations since 1976, through concurrent missions based in New York and Bangkok respectively.
