Thailand and Cuba strengthen ties in the framework of the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of Diplomatic Relations

BANGKOK, April 4, 2018. - The new Director General of the Department of America and South Pacific Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of Thailand, Ambassador Sarun Charoensuwan, hosted a meeting with the Ambassador of Cuba to Thailand, Hector Conde Almeida.

In the cordial meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry, the good path of bilateral relations between both countries was ratified and the mutual willingness to continue strengthening them was reiterated. Both sides highlighted the historical significance of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, to be commemorated on May 15th, 2018.

The good outcomes of the inter-chancellery meeting, held in Havana, in April 2016, were reviewed, as well as the progress and potential of bilateral cooperation in the fields of biotechnological applications, tourism, health, education and sports; especially the joint efforts in the medical-pharmaceutical production for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, as a contribution to the Development Strategy 4.0 in Thailand. The forthcoming participation of a high-level delegation from Thailand at the International Convention "Cuba-Salud 2018", to be held in Havana from 23 to 27 April, was valued as a good opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

During the exchange, the progress of updating process of the Cuban economic and social development model was addressed. The Ambassador of Cuba thanked the Director General, the government and the people of Thailand for their support to the United Nations Resolution on the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government against Cuba.

Both sides agreed on the importance of promoting South-South cooperation; of inter-regional collaboration within the framework of the Latin America-East Asia Cooperation Forum (FEALAC); as well as in the multilateral forums related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the efforts of the international community for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
