New York, May 15, 2018. The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, met on May 15 with Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, was also present. The Executive Director was accompanied by Kwabena Osei-Danquah and Noemi Espinoza, Director and Adviser of the Division for Governance and Multilateral Affairs, respectively.
At the meeting both representatives exchanged about the excellent relations between Cuba and the Population Fund and ratified the will to continue strengthening them. The Cuban Permanent Representative referred to South-South cooperation as one of the pillars of the revolutionary foreign policy, especially in the health care field, and expressed the island's willingness to promote joint projects in this regard.
Other topics discussed were the positive progress of the projects in Cuba, particularly regarding sexual and reproductive health; and the challenges that UNFPA faces in terms of financial resources.
The Cuban diplomat took the opportunity to thank the Fund for its rapid response after the passage of Hurricane Irma in Cuba and the contribution that this institution offers to the Secretary General's report on the implementation of the resolution regarding the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba.
