Press Release: The Moncada's action opened up the path to a strategic victory, declared the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations.

New York, 27 July 2018.  The Moncada's action opened up the path to a strategic victory. Sixty-five years later, Cuba is at another turning point in its history. As we celebrate the Day of National Rebelliousness, we Cubans are engaged in updating our Economic and Social Model of Socialist Development and drafting the new Constitution of the Republic, processes that are characterized by the broad participation of all the people, without giving up, not even for a single moment, Marti’s legacy and our revolutionary tradition; declared the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, in the ceremony to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of the Attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks, organized by the Movement of Solidarity with Cuba in New York City.

In her remarks, the representative of the island recalled the historical importance of the actions of July 26, 1953, which, despite the fact that it was a defeat in tactical terms, it became the trigger to raise awareness of Cubans and their struggle to end Batista’s tyranny, led by a generation of young people whose main objective was to transform the political, economic and social regime of Cuba and to eliminate foreign interference, misery, unemployment, unhealthiness and illiteracy inflicted upon our people.

Sixty-five years later, she said, Cuba has continued to strengthen the democratic character of its institutions, by enforcing laws, policies and programs of a popular and participatory nature, in order to meet the aspirations of the people, guided, as in 1953, by the ideals and vision of the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro.

Rodríguez Abascal seized the opportunity to further express profound gratitude to the Movement of Solidarity with Cuba in the United States and its representation in New York for its commitment to the Caribbean nation, which has been unconditional and loyal since the triumph of the Revolution. She also noted that such support has been an invaluable force in the struggle for the total and unconditional lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, and has contributed to bring down the policy of isolation that has been attempted against the country.
